Non-Immigrant Visa Nonimmigrant visas are issued to foreign nationals seeking to enter the United States on a temporary basis for tourism, business, medical treatment and certain types of temporary work. The type of nonimmigrant visa needed is defined by immigration law, and related to the purpose of the travel. Generally, an individual applies directly to the U.S. consulate or embassy abroad for a tourist (B-2) or business nonimmigrant (B-1) visa. However, foreign nationals seeking to enter the United States to study or work may require certain authorization and documentation prior to applying for a nonimmigrant visa. For an alphabetical listing all of the nonimmigrant visa classifications and specific requirements refer to the USCIS website. or the U.S. Department of State website. Issuance of a visa does not guarantee entry to the United States. A visa simply indicates that a U.S. consular officer at an American embassy or consulate has reviewed the application and that officer has determined that the individual is eligible to enter the country for a specific purpose. The CBP Officer at the port-of-entry will conduct an inspection to determine if the individual is eligible for admission under U.S. immigration law.
On 8 Oct 2026 we checked this rule against the official sources that govern entry to the United States, chiefly U.S. Government Publishing Office; 8 CFR 212.1. Two independent checks reached the same result.
Public visa data (as of 17 Feb 2026) said the same; the check confirmed it.
See this check in the log of checks and changes, and how verification works in the methodology.

What these governments tell their own citizens about travel to the United States as a whole, as of 30 Sept 2026. It is not about visas, and it reflects each government’s relations and consular reach as well as conditions on the ground.
Your passport must be valid for your whole stay in the United States.
In a justified emergency, border officials may accept a passport with less validity left.
This is the rule for Guyana passports, which are on the Six-Month Club list.
Citizens of the countries in this document are exempt from the six-month rule and need only have a passport valid for their intended period of stay.
This page answers whether you need a visa and how long you can stay on a short tourist visit. It does not cover other documents or permission to work. Entry rules change, sometimes without notice, and border officials make the final decision: confirm the requirements for your trip with the official immigration website or embassy of the United States.
