Public visa data
Rules marked “Public data” come from publicly available visa data (data as of 17 Feb 2026), in the open dataset imorte/passport-index-data, revision 9c59780. We convert it into our own format and replace each rule once it has been checked against an official source. The dataset is published under the MIT licence:

Economic and population data
The experimental Economic Reach and Population Reach rankings use the World Bank’s World Development Indicators(CC BY 4.0):
- GDP, PPP (current international $) (NY.GDP.MKTP.PP.CD), 2024, retrieved 27 Sept 2026, source updated 13 Jul 2026. No 2024 data for Cuba, Eritrea, North Korea, Liechtenstein, Monaco, San Marino, South Sudan, Syria, Taiwan, Vatican City, Venezuela, Yemen.
- Population, total (SP.POP.TOTL), 2024, retrieved 27 Sept 2026, source updated 13 Jul 2026. No 2024 data for Taiwan, Vatican City.
We use the published values as they are. The World Bank does not endorse this site.
Travel advice and human development
The travel advice shown on passport and destination pages is official advice for each country as a whole:
- Global Affairs Canada, Travel Advice and Advisories, retrieved 30 Sept 2026 (196 destinations). Licence: Open Government Licence – Canada. Contains information licensed under the Open Government Licence – Canada.
- Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office, Foreign travel advice (GOV.UK), retrieved 30 Sept 2026 (197 destinations). Licence: Open Government Licence v3.0. Contains public sector information licensed under the Open Government Licence v3.0.
- U.S. Department of State, Travel Advisories, retrieved 30 Sept 2026 (194 destinations). Licence: Public domain (U.S. Government work).
The Very High HDI Reach ranking uses the Human Development Index for 2023 from the UNDP, Human Development Report 2025 (licence: CC BY 3.0 IGO), retrieved 30 Sept 2026. No 2023 data for Kosovo, Macao, Monaco, North Korea, Taiwan, Vatican City.
We reduce each government’s advice to one level for the whole country and keep its original wording; advice about parts of a country is not used. None of these governments or UNDP endorse this site, and their data is shown as published.
Passport cover illustrations
The passport covers on passport pages are our own simplified drawings, marked “Illustration”. Their colour and wording — in the language and script printed on the cover — come from public photos and descriptions: Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons and official websites. Colours are approximate, and we don’t reproduce coats of arms or other artwork. Of 199 covers, 150 are confirmed by a source, 46 are read from photos with some uncertainty and 3 are best guesses.

Maps and names
- Country shapes: Natural Earth (public domain), packaged by world-atlas (ISC licence). Small countries without a shape at this scale are shown as dots.
- Borders follow Natural Earth, which draws them as they are on the ground. We change them in two cases. Where the US, UK, EU, Canadian and Australian governments all recognise another country’s sovereignty, we follow them: Crimea is shown as part of Ukraine, Northern Cyprus and the UN buffer zone as part of Cyprus, and Somaliland as part of Somalia. Leased areas are shown as part of the country that leases them out: Baikonur as part of Kazakhstan, Guantánamo Bay as part of Cuba.
- The outline on a country’s page shows its main territory. It leaves out islands and regions far from it, such as Hawaii or French Guiana. The faint grid lines are 10° apart.
- Country names: Unicode CLDR (Unicode licence), with a few common English forms. Names are used only to describe travel rules and don’t express a position on the status of any territory.
- Country codes: i18n-iso-countries (MIT licence).
Fonts and software
- Newsreader by Production Type and Public Sans by the U.S. Web Design System, both under the SIL Open Font License 1.1. Fonts are served from this site.
- d3-geo and topojson-client (ISC licence) draw the maps when the site is built.
- Flags: country-flag-icons (MIT licence), simplified 3:2 designs shown next to country names.
- Built with Astro (MIT licence).
