Most visas are able to be lodged online, which is encouraged and preferred to ensure faster processing. If you do not know what type of visa you may be seeking or whether you can apply online, please use the Visa Finder on the Department of Home Affairs website. Online Applications The Australian Department of Home Affairs mostly offers online visa lodgement for Timor-Leste nationals.  Online applications allow you to lodge your application 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, without having to come into an Australian Embassy. Online applications are managed through ImmiAccount.  Advantages of lodging online through ImmiAccount include: * expedited processing at the Australian Embassy in Timor-Leste; * ability to easily attach documents to an application; * checking the progress of an application online, including from your mobile phone; * generating alerts for status changes and correspondence; * viewing all current and previous correspondence; * updating application details online; and * checking your visa status any time after grant through the Visa Entitlement Verification Online (VEVO) . To apply now for an online Visitor visa, visit our website by following this link: Online e600 For further information on ImmiAccount follow this link: ImmiAccount or watch our video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iIkCmD1NZVg As of 1 July 2018, all Transit Visa applications must be lodged online.  Please find more information: Transit Visa The following visa applications must be lodged via paper forms at an Australian Embassy - Medical Treatment Visas; Adoption/Child Visas; and Citizenship by Descent applications, during counter opening hours (see above). Transiting through Darwin, Australia from Dili If you are departing Dili and transiting through Darwin to another country, you must apply online for a Transit Visa. Currently, all passengers transiting Australia on flights from Dili to Darwin are required to be processed through immigration and customs clearance to collect their baggage and recheck into an onward flight.  This means that all passengers require a visa to enter Darwin from Dili, irrespective of the amount of time they are staying.  Transit Without Visa (TWOV) conditions do not apply on this leg. Health Requirements and Medical Examinations Detailed information regarding health requirements for visa applicants is explained thoroughly on the department’s website. See: Health Requirements. Medical examinations conducted overseas are only acceptable if conducted by approved panel physician. A panel physician is a doctor or a radiologist who has been appointed by the Australian Government to perform medical examinations on visa applicants who have applied from outside Australia. For a list of Australian approved Panel Physicians. See: Panel Physicians. Not all applications require a medical examination. You should not have a visa medical examination until you have been formally requested to do so by the Australian Embassy or other office processing your application. Character Requirement In some cases, you may be required to provide penal clearances to meet our character requirement from countries in which you have resided for 12 months or more during the last ten years. Police certificates for Timor-Leste can be obtained from the Civil Registrations Office within the Department of Justice in Dili, and may be obtained by using a proxy. See: Character and Police Certificate Requirements Processing Times Processing times for visa applications vary. In most cases, applications are assessed in order of receipt and the actual processing time for each application varies according to individual circumstances. Incomplete applications may take longer to be finalised. Please submit your visa application as early as possible and well in advance of planned travel. You should not book flights or make travel commitments until you have a visa to travel to Australia. The department will not be liable for any financial loss incurred by clients whose visa application was finalised later than expected or where an application is unsuccessful. You can find global visa and citizenship processing times on our website. Translation of Documents Any document in a language other than English must be accompanied by a certified English translation. Documents translated in Timor-Leste must be endorsed with the translator’s full name, address, telephone number, and details of their qualifications and experience in the language being translated. See: Translating documents into English Check Your Own Visa Status and Entitlement Online - VEVO VEVO allows visa holders to check their visa details and conditions online.  See: Visa Entitlement Verification Online To access VEVO, a visa holder will need their Visa Grant Number or Transaction Reference Number, and their passport or ImmiCard information.  If you do not have one of these reference numbers, please use the VEVO Request for Reference Number Form. You can also check and email your visa details by downloading the myVEVO mobile app from your app store. Updating Passport or Address Details To update your passport or address details we require a completed Form 929 - Change of address and/or passport details and copies of your new and old passports. See: Updating your passport or address If you attempt to travel without updating your passport details, you may experience delays or be denied boarding by the airline. If the visa you held was an Electronic Travel Authority (ETA), you will need to apply for a new ETA online. Australia's Electronic Visas Australian visas are issued and recorded electronically. All visa records are stored on a central database in Australia which enables online checking of visa details by visa holders, registered Australian organisations and airline staff. No visa label is required. To facilitate your travel to Australia you may wish to print out a copy of your original visa grant notification. When you check-in to fly to Australia, airline staff may refer to your visa grant letter and passport to electronically confirm that you have authority to travel to Australia prior to boarding the aircraft.  It is important to ensure that all passport and biodata details have been recorded correctly in your application.  See: About your visa Australian Passports The immigration section does not process Australian passport applications. Enquiries should be directed to the Consular Section of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade within the Embassy. See: Services for Australians Overseas Passport Validity Unlike some countries, Australia does not insist on six months passport validity. However, it is recommended that your passport should not expire when you are in Australia. You will need a valid passport to leave Australia as well as enter. Some airlines may decline to carry passengers with less than six months validity. You should check with your airline whether this will be an issue for them.

How this rule was checked

On 30 Oct 2026 we checked this rule against the official sources that govern entry to Australia, chiefly Federal Register of Legislation: LIN 21/056 Arrangements for Visitor (Class FA) visa applications (Compilation No. 6, 29 September 2026). Two independent checks reached the same result.

Public visa data (as of 17 Feb 2026) said the same; the check confirmed it.

See this check in the log of checks and changes, and how verification works in the methodology.

Plan your trip

Before you travel

This page answers whether you need a visa and how long you can stay on a short tourist visit. It does not cover passport validity, other documents or permission to work. Entry rules change, sometimes without notice, and border officials make the final decision: confirm the requirements for your trip with the official immigration website or embassy of Australia.
